' I began playing the trombone at the age of 11 back at home on the Isle of Man. Throughout High School, I was able to perform in many of the amateur ensembles the Isle of Man has to offer. I played as first trombone with my local brass band, the Isle of Man Orchestra and Youth Orchestra. There were also many opportunities for Big Band experience.

During sixth form, I decided that a musical performance degree was the path to pursue to auditioned and gained a place at the Royal Northern College of Music. In July this year I hope to leave the College with a BMus degree. John

The RNCM has presented me with opportunities to play in various high quality ensembles from Opera Orchestras through to New Music ensembles and Big Band. I have been able to learn from some of the best brass players and teachers in the UK.

I am at present hoping to gain a place on the PGCE course split between the RNCM and Manchester Metropolitan University. My teaching experience in the field of brass is both high and varied. For many years I have run a learner project aimed at teaching young brass players of all standards to the point where they can feel comfortable playing in ensembles. This involved 'one-to-one' tuition, group tuiiton and taking rehearsals. My experience covers both conducting and directing rehearsals.

I have been lucky enough to have several private pupils whilst in Manchester of various ages and musical standards.

Whilst my time spent studying for the degree at the RNCM has been predominantly focussed on the Classical side of Music performance and tuition, I feel able to take on a progressive approach to meet bandskool's requirements and look forward to helping brass students pursue many different styles of playing whatever their standard and interests may be.'
